I forgot to post this, but I did it last semester for my illustration class. I did really well on it and thought it was worth posting.

I ran out of paint when I went to do this, so I ran to Niagara Hobbies in St. Catharines to grab some. I grabbed some primary colours by Grumbacher and went on my way. Little did I know, the paint was super thick and heavy and it said "lightfastness = excellent" which I completely looked over. I normally use the Winsor & Newton Galleria brand paint, which has a much lower viscosity, and doesn't dry nearly as quick. But, I really like the end result anyway, even if there are some mistakes and unwanted brushstrokes ( I like it when things are flat and smooth).

House Illustration

I did this last semester and forgot to post it.
I hope I never have to do this again.

CD Packaging Make-over

The assignment was to take a CD and re-do the packaging. Although I love the current design of Garfunkel and Oates' "Music Songs" I decided to re-do it because, well, I love them. Remember, these are comps, not a final piece. We'll be doing it on the computer at some point this semester.

Excuse the quality of the photos, I took pictures right before handing it in.

While first year was all about exploring (well this year is too, but on a more "advanced" level I guess you could say), this year for me is all about taking the old and re-newing it. I love old-school things like collage, hand drawn type, typewriters, etc. and am applying the techniques I've learned so far in the past year and a half to these things I used to be comfortable with that, in my collage career, I started to shy away from because of all these brand new things that were being thrown at me. I feel like I'm re-visiting my roots, a new theme for the new year, but doing something new at the same time, and it feels really good.

polaroids!

Amber so kindly gave me 10 polaroid exposures when I went to visit her over the break. Over a couple days, I played around in different light settings. I've been scouring eBay to buy more, since they were discontinued last year, but it's terribly expensive. I will definitely invest in some for the future. I have one exposure left, and I hope I make it a good one!

I love this picture because he looks so ridiculously Canadian.
Hockey and toques!

I like the shadows on the ice and the sun in the background.

The lights in my studio.
The wire flower was given to me by my life drawing teacher,
it was part of a project that someone left behind.
It looks pretty in the light. (I was testing the effect of the lighting.)

This is a little basket that was too cute to ignore in the dollar store.
I was testing the lighting, which turned out pretty bad.

The tea I made in one of my favourite pastel coloured mugs.
I was testing the flash, which turned out awful.

lino printing - an experiment

Yesterday was my first time doing lino prints. I had a set of 5 different blades and a handle that I got for x-mas last year from Alysha, and some linoleum I grabbed from Curry's back in June.

I think why I never used it was because I was waiting to come up with something super fantastic, then I got picky and never ended doing anything. The other day, I picked it up out of the blue, doodled a girl standing profile (my sketchbooks are filled with these long-haired girls), and started carving away while listening to Sleater-Kinney and drinking earl grey.

I don't have an ink brayer, or anything proper to press the paper down. I slopped paint on the lino and used a small glass candle and rolled it over top, using different pressures for different prints. It was a lot of fun, and I'd really like to do this for covers of an upcoming possible zine.

All of them turned out neat in different ways, although the blue ones are my least favourite. I think I did okay for my first time. I like to think that in art, there aren't any failures, but learning experiences.
